US POMPEO CALLS FOR TOUGHER MEASURES AGAINST CHINA

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has talked about the need for a different, tougher approach in the country’s engagement with China, saying its almost 50 years of relationship is no longer working.

He was referring to the visit to Beijing in 1972 by Richard Nixon, the 37th president of the United States, as well as meetings with Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai which enabled China get into the so-called family of nations.

Pompeo said changing the Chinese Communist Party’s behaviour cannot be the mission of the Chinese people alone, as he expressed faith in the ability of free nations to work together to defend freedom. 

His speech on Thursday was the fourth in a series to explain America’s relationship with China and the imbalances in that.
