The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, says the Police recorded about 717 rape cases in Nigeria between January and May this year, with 799 suspects arrested so far.
According to the IGP, investigations on 631 of the cases have been concluded and charged to court, while 52 cases are still under investigation.
Adamu disclosed this to State House correspondents after a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday at the State House, Abuja.
The IGP said he informed the president about sexual and gender-based violence across the country and what the Police is doing to it.
He calls on Nigerians that come across any victim of sexual offences, rape or gender-based violence to quickly report to law enforcement agents, as keeping quiet enables the perpetrators to carry on with the offences
