NIGERIA’S PRESIDENT CHARGES ECOWAS LEADERS ON CONSTITUTIONAL PROVISIONS

Buhari-in-Niamey

Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari has urged leaders of nations to resist the temptation of seeking to remain in power beyond constitutional provisions.

Buhari was speaking at the one day summit by the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS Heads of State and Government held in Niamey, Niger Republic.

He said it is important that leaders of individual Member-States of ECOWAS, adhere to the constitutional provisions of their countries, particularly on term limits.

According to him, this is one area that generates crisis and political tension in ECOWAS sub-region.

The Nigerian leader said the challenges facing the sub-region are enormous; from socio-economic matters to security issues, adding that the ECOWAS sub-region cannot, therefore, afford another political crisis, in the guise of tenure elongation.”
