Governor Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples’ Democratic Party has emerged winner of the just concluded governorship election in Edo State, south-south Nigeria.

Obaseki recorded victory with 307, 955 as against his closest rival Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress, APC who recorded 223,619 votes.

Although 14 political parties had candidates for the election, which held in 18 Local Government Areas, 192 Wards, and 2,627 polling units, the candidates of the All Progressives Congress and Peoples’ Democratic Party were the leading contestants.

Obaseki who is the incumbent Governor of the state was elected on APC’s platform in 2016 but defected to the PDP after being denied the ticket owing to intra-party squabbles.

In the meantime, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has said a certificate of return will be presented to Governor Obaseki within the next seven days as required by the law.

While appreciating supporters, Governor Obaseki said he is committed to making Edo great again.
