Amnesty International is calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a national crisis on rape.
The organization made the call following the rape and murder of an 18-year-old student, Barakat Bello in Ibadan, which is coming in less than a week after a similar situation involving Vera Uwaila Omozuwa in Benin, Edo State.
The Amnesty International in a statement said that frequent reports of rape across the country are a shocking reminder of violence women and girls face; while the government’s response continues to be woefully inadequate.
It noted that violence against women and girls are often not properly registered or investigated, with conviction rates for rape very low and this must change now.
The Amnesty International therefore asked the Nigerian authorities to ensure women and girls’ safety.
